Lincoln's writings are among the most eloquent that I have ever seen. Have you ever read his Letter to Mrs. Bixby?. It's brilliant. It's hard to imagine that our era would produce anything such as this.
Yes, I love this letter. Next to the Illinois farewell speech, it is my favorite of his writings. Thank you for the link. I want to make it more prominent on this page, and will soon start a list of websites.
This is the terrific picture Bluffing Wildly took for me with his camera phone when he was at the ALA conference in Washington. It's nice to have talented friends.

I am also a T.E. Lawrence freak, a Poe freak, a Sherlock Holmes freak, and a Herman Melville freak, but Lincoln is the coolest. I once lost an entire 7th grade on a Friday afternoon while practice teaching. My secret fantasy is to write for MAD magazine, which I have used as a major news source in the past. They were the first to report Al Haig's resignation. I drove a VW beetle for 15 years until I burned out the distributor wires and blew a rod through the engine. I am now driving a VW Golf.

Mark Twain said this also. But both Twain and Lincoln probably got it from Samuel Johnson.
